Video Production / Editing

Skillset

I am a confident and capable all-rounder when it comes to video production and post-production.

  • I plan, storyboard and direct
  • I am an experienced camera operator (Cinema/DSLR)
  • I am an experienced editor (Premiere / Final Cut / Resolve)
  • I enjoy creating motion graphics (Adobe After Effects)
  • I am also a professional sound engineer / sound designer
  • I am a composer and musician
  • Able to work completely individually (multiple cameras), or within a team

SHOW REEL

All items that appear in this showreel I directed, shot, edited and sounded with the exception of the two Ronin music videos where I was working with an additional camera operator who provided some footage.

STORY TELLING

Storytelling is an art. I think it's important to understand your subject, where they've been and where they are going. I enjoy finding the story, and then delivering it in a palatable but detailed format.

Video is my favourite tool. It encompasses my other skills in sound and motion graphics and allows me a strong creative outlet.

I enjoy interviewing people and finding ways to extract the story from them without it feeling contrived.

* I did not interview Iona in this case but shot and edited the segment.

The Graduation Video was challenging to shoot as I had to constantly be ahead of the action, so moving the camera equipment at pace and setting up extremely quickly. I wanted this video to capture the grandeur of the day and the story from start to finish.

I also composed and recorded the first two minutes of music.

CREATIVE EDITING

Having worked predominantly with cinema and DSLR cameras, I wanted the challenge of seeing if the increasing capability of a mobile phone camera was good enough for producing a low budget music video.

This music video was shot entirely on a Samsung S9 smart phone and edited in Davinci Resolve.

The following music video allowed me to utilise my After Effects capabilities. Possibly the most fun yet challenging music video I've created.

COMMERCIAL

I worked with a real estate agency who wanted to show their innovation by being one of the first to bring video production of their properties to the local area. I did a lot of property videos for them.

The agency owner has a friend (the secret agent in this video) who conceived this 'play on words' idea for a social media advert.

I then developed a storyboard, researched the locations and shot and edited this clip.

It was nice to do something fast paced as the property videos I made for them were usually much slower.

SOUND

What you hear can really change your perception when watching a video. Getting it right from foley (as you'll hear in this example) through to music can be as important as the image.

Before I developed my passion for video production I had been creating and editing sound and music which naturally ties into my video editing capabilities.

When filming this segment, the talent arrived much earlier than expected and the sound to camera was not yet setup but I had to film immediately anyway.

This video shows the sound design I created to cover for the lack of sound on the filmed clip.

*headphones or good quality speakers are advised

MOTION GRAPHICS

I really enjoy designing and creating animations like this University e-Christmas card example.

The shot of the building is from a photo taken on a warm summers day. Through Photoshop I added the snow caps to the building and dusted the brick. Using After Effects I then created the particle snow fall, clouds and twinkling stars.

The downward movement and particle text were animated to match the music provided. (2 tracks I edited together)
